Beelieve

So, as some of you may know, the UB administration is bringing back the UB Mascot. Where did it go? Well, it really did not go anywhere. The bee has always been our mascot, since 1937 actually, but they want to revamp the mascot. The school is evolving and changing, so why not make our bee evolve as well? The admin is planning on releasing teasers to students every now and then, and then showing the new, final design at the UBSC Spring Block Party on April 22nd, 2010 - hosted by ME!...Okay, it's not just me, it's all of UBSC. But, I am one of two co-chairs who will plan the entire event :) What are your thoughts on the mascot? Do you like the old one? Do you feel that it is, in fact, time for a change? Are you excited?

As far as the bee goes, there is a very colorful history that comes along with it. The bee has always been the school's official mascot, drawn in yearbooks and appearing at games in costume form. In the 40's, the bee was featured in the campus update, "The Beehive". In the 70's, the director of athletics Frank Szymanski made drastic changes to the bee design. He hired a former alumnus's father to draw it up, and after over 100 designs he came to the "Super Bee" who had muscles and a mean face.

Even though the bee has been at UB for years and years, it was clearly a character made for athletics. UB does have several intramural sports teams, and even sports clubs, but we do not compete on the intercollegiate level. Maybe by revamping the mascot we have a hope for the future. Do you think that bringing sports back to UB is possible? Wanted? Needed?

Personally, I am happy that they're updating the bee. I think that we do need a more modern version of the bee, since the last one was created in the 70's, almost 40 years ago!! Also, with the new generation of students at UB, it may be in their best interests to change the mascot. We have a younger crowd of students being accepted, and most of them think of colleges with mascots and sports and more traditional things. UB isn't truly traditional, but we can always afford to create new traditions for the school. :)

Thanks for getting us ready to beelieve, Courtney! And good luck chairing the block party--that's an enormous task! I'll add my two cents on this as I receive more information, as I'm part of the team working on the bee renaissance through the Office of University Relations. Get ready for major buzz!

FINALLY! THE ANSWER TO MY PRAYERS!!!

Haha last semester I wrote about how someone had told me the bee was our mascot, but no one could confirm. This is great news, and I hope really good for the campus too.

Can he/she travel with the Moot Court teams?

a little bee told me that there might be "sightings" of the bee before the block party... seems to me the first person posting a sighting should win a prize...

I would absolutely love it if UB were to compete in NCAA sports again. C'mon, we were one of the founding schools of the North East Conference! We've won national titles! We should be out there!
