As some of the more dedicated readers out there may have already noticed, this will be my second semester blogging for UB. Last semester was a great experience and I am excited to be back.
I suppose I should start with a little bit about myself. I am a first year full-time day law student. We call ourselves 1Ls. I take the full course load, plus whatever other activities come my way. I have lived in Baltimore for about 6 years now. I am a huge fan of this city. I attended my undergrad at Loyola College in Maryland, which is up Charles Street from UB (you have to go past Hopkins first). In between Undergrad and Law School, I worked for two years as a Rehabilitation Coordinator at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.
Otherwise, I follow the Phillies and Ravens. I watch soccer when I can (mostly English). I do own a T.V., but all it has hooked up to it is the Nintendo that I am in the process of repairing. I enjoy the internet and understand too many nerdy things to ever admit too publicly.
This semester, I am going to try to make some improvements to my own blogging. As representative of the law school, I again hope to provide some insight into the life of a UB Law student. A lot of the time, the law school operates on its own orbit from the rest of the school, so I like to give some insight into what actually goes on in our building.
A second area that I am going to try to hit this semester are interesting things about UB. I have already thought a bit about a few topics, including some of the cooler study spots on campus (hey, I am in Law School, I get excited about these kinds of things), campus events, and some other news-worthy campus bits.
Finally, I hope to be able to bring in some more of the UB citizenry. Students, professors, other people on our campus. Part of this also means the readers. I want to do some better self-promotion of this blog this semester, and hopefully generate some positive or interesting comments.
Also, those of you who read this last semester will know that I enjoy sharing the funny or interesting cases we read in class. (You know, like the one where the cow fell through the second story ceiling? Or the one where the judge wrote about the "very nature of a reputable dog?") I am going to start calling it:
What I Learned in Law School.
This week, we have two:
First of all, in Property class we learned that there is no such word as "flammable." Instead, you should use "inflammable," especially since "inflammable" means "capable of catching fire." It does not mean "unable to catch fire."
Secondly, again in Property class, we read that in exchange for the use of 110 acres of land, a man named Roland had to, each Christmas, perform for the King (of England) "altogether, and at once, a leap, a puff, and a fart."
Nowadays, we just pay taxes. I am not sure which system I prefer. Go ahead and let me know what you think would be a fair deal on your property in the comments. Taxes based on the mill rate? Or maybe you are more the profane performer type?

Hey Spencer,
Welcome back to you too. i too am excited about the second semster of blogging. We have a similar thought too and that was getting more people interested in reading this blog. for me. I post a message on my Facebook page and send an email to my friends and family but I think we really should be promoted a little more. I'm takind IDIS 302 and last night John from the Academic Resource Center came and spoke on a few points and when he mention the daily digest and how he knows we read it from top to bottom, the look on people's face, like what? So I'm guessing many people missed out on the chance or ignored the chance to submit an entry to be a blogger. I picked up a UB Post yesterday and later today, I'm going to email them and see if we can get a little exposure !!!!
Oh yeah and don't forget to keep clarifying some those law school terms you use !
Welcome back, Spencer! I love your "What I Learned in Law School," but imho, the law school should stick to teaching law and not English. The entry for "inflammable" from Merriam-Webster clearly states that "flammable" is a word: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/inflammable
Have fun!
Charlene, I agree! I am going to start using my Twitter account to announce posts.
And Giordana, I guess this is what I get for not doing my due diligence on the research! According to Dictionary.com, inflammable is older by 200 years, but flammable has evolved into usage as well. However, Merriam Webster carries a lot more authority, at least in my opinion. Maybe someone out there is a etymologist and can get to the root of this debate?

haha I'm actually really looking forward to hearing about the things you learn in law school!
Hi Spencer...I'm looking forward to finding out about "cooler" study spots on campus... hopefully cushy chairs, an ottoman to put my feet up on, a table to place my drink upon... internet access is a must and I love to look up from studying and watch people... but I don't want to hear them, please. I promise to share if I find this spot also.
hahaha im going to keep using flammable because it sounds better (to me). im looking forward to reading more things youve learned in law school :)
