We need a wide receiver, but is signing Donte Stallworth the way we want to accomplish our goals? Stallworth, a former first round draft pick, like many other NFL players has made some serious mistakes in his personal life. Maybe these issues can be attributed to the stardom of playing professional football and coming from up from nothing, but the fact remains that because of his actions someone is dead.
Stallworth’s made the decision to drive drunk one morning (a decision people make everyday) in Miami where he committed DUI manslaughter. He only served 24 days of a 30 day sentence and was cut from the Cleveland Browns the day he was reinstated into the league. In a statement released by Stallworth he said, “I will never get that morning back. It weighs on me every day and will for the rest of my life. What I can do is move forward, try to be a better person, try to convince others not to do what I did and warn others about the dangers of drinking and driving. I have to show otherwise that what happened doesn’t reflect who I am.” Source Yahoo.
From a fan’s perspective the deal looks good. We signed him to a one year deal for $900,000 with bonus incentives available depending upon his performance. We can’t really lose anything if it turns out he can’t play and because this year is uncapped it won’t have any effect on signing additional free agents (Cough… Brandon Marshall). Stallworth hasn’t played football since 2008, but at age 28 he still has a few years of productivity ahead of him. Has he sincerely changed for the better and evolved as a human being? That’s left to be decided by the fans during his time spent here in Baltimore.
The bigger issue here however are the moral implications of signing a player who has committed DUI Manslaughter a charge in Maryland that carries a maximum sentence of 3 years. As members of this community how do you feel about a player like this representing Charm City? Is football simply a business or do the players, team, and organization represent something more? On a personal level I believe in the American justice system and although Stallworth got off easily (24 days of 30 day sentence & paying the family three million), he like anyone else deserves a second chance at redemption and life. How do you feel about Donte Stallworth stepping into the purple and black?

hi, ben :) i can appreciate what stallworth's done since being released (can't believe it was only 30days for manslaughter), but he will always be that guy. some people still haven't moved past ray lewis's involvement in a death from a decade ago, and his charges were dropped. it's easier to separate the player from the man when it's small stuff (like plaxico burress), but people falter when other lives are involved. it only takes a single moment to destroy something, but i want to believe that he's become a better person since it happened. on a personal level, he needs to keep being vocal about the dangers of drunk driving. on a professional level, i'm willing to believe he still has it. the ravens are all about picking up strays and putting them to work (zorn should be interesting...) :)
Hi Ben! The more I read these blogs, the more I like all the people I have the chance to work with on this :) Being born and raised in Baltimore, I am a huge Raven's fan.
I, like Michelle, cannot believe he only served 24 days of a 30 day sentence. I know a man who killed an 18 year old boy while drunk driving, and since then he has not touched a drink. He thinks about that boy every day. And I hope that Stallworth thinks about that person every day, and it seems like he does. My thing is, if he can walk away from that tragedy, and NEVER do something like that again, he deserves a second chance. If he can play the game, I don't mind that he walks around in the purple and black... Let's see what next season holds. :) I'm optimistic.
Thanks for the replies I encourage you to talk about this blog to your classmates as I am to get more people involved.
As far as Stallworth goes he's a very little risk investment wise, I just hope he is sincere about the changes made in his life. We definitely need a wide receiver and he fits perfect at the 3 slot especially if we can get someone new.. cough Brandon Marshall and put Mason in at 2 if he comes back.
@Michelle
I think it's funny that you mentioned Jim Zorn. I wasn't a fan of him in Washington but then again he wasn't given much to work with. I'm excited/nervous to see how the relationship between him and Flacco works out.
Once again thanks for the comments keep reading!

welcome aboard, ben! great first post ... i'm a burgeoning ravens fan, since i grew up in redskins territory. interesting conundrum here--thanks for posting about it. did you see the blind side, btw? did you like it?
I think I am mostly glad we aren't repeating previous mistakes of spending millions on one player who might not always perform. I still need some convincing that his ON field performance is what we need, but I'm hopeful.
@Giodana,
Any team where the fans dress up as female hogs, I can't really say I'm a fan of haha. Anyways, I liked the Blind Side how it was about our player but didn't really enjoy the film that much. I thought it focused too much on blind stereotypes in Southern Culture. Some of the acting was poor although Sandra Bullock did a good job.
@Spencer
I think we're all hopeful for what this season will bring. Maybe the O's can pull it together until the Fall.
