Okay, first let me start off by letting everyone know that this Sunday is Pi Day: 3.14! It is the one holiday celebrated by math enthusiasts around the world. Experts have calculated over 1 trillion numbers that follow the decimal in Pi, but I can only remember 3.1415....and that's all I need. In high school I had a teacher who loved pi day, and he made a contest for his students: Who can memorize the first 100 digits of pi? Apparently, that was me. I was the only student to memorize all 100 digits that followed 3. -> So, I won a shirt that has a giant pi symbol, with cow print and utters (cow pie!) and a huge apple pie. Of course, now I can't remember any of it. haha.
Next, have you guys heard about the SGA Elections coming up?! Okay, it's not really that exciting, but for me it's nerve racking. I'm running for President of UBSC this year, so I will be campaigning like mad! Aside from my own endeavors, this is the time of year where anyone can come out, express interest, and run for a seat within the student governments (whether it's UBSC, SBA, or SEB). If you're interested, stop by CSI and get an application! Elections are April 10th - 17th! Another interesting thing coming up: Town hal
l. Okay...again, I know it's not that exciting, especially with the boring name "Town Hall". That's why this year we renamed it to "Courtside Chat" and we're hosting this event on March 30th, 2010 ( 4:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. ) in the UB Gym in the AC. This is where students have the opportunity to talk to our administrators about what's going on around campus: What you like, don't like, and what is impacting your education at UB. The student governments are here to be the bridge between students and administrators, and of course when we receive complaints, we pass them up the chain. But, this is the time where students can sit face to face with administrators, and hear exactly what they have to say, not from us, but from the admin themselves. For those who can't make the chat, we are using facebook and e-mail to get issues/concerns out there, and then anyone can watch the live webcast from www.ubalt.edu/webcasts Maybe you'll want to stop by and see what this is all about! And now, what you've been waiting for (and you know you have): Sex Columns! How many of you know that we have a sex column in the UB Post? It's called Bangin' in Baltimore. This March's sex column is titled "Say Aah - It's My Birthday". Basically the author, Cindy Langford, explains to everyone that her 21st birthday is coming up, and she proceeds to tell everyone that she doesn't just want gifts...she wants a man. Not just any man, but a man who can do some explicit things to her. She tells of her own sexual experiences, one involving someone who "simultaneously pulled my hair and choked me without missing a beat". Now, this is a sex column, so of course it's going to be explicit. But, this one in particular has been the topic of much debate lately, even in my Ethical Issues class. I think my main concern is that she no longer keeps it at just a general sex column, she brings her own experiences into it, and she has her picture up there (a suggestive one at that). My professor explained that, as a mother, she would have concerns for this girls safety: Her birthday is out there, her picture is out there, and her personal experiences are out there - would anyone take advantage of that?
Now, don't get me wrong. I know the author and I love her to death, but I just think that her own experiences should have stayed out of it, and maybe she should have kept some of her own information to herself. I have absolutely no problem with the column, I think that you should be able to talk about whatever, but I think that certain things should be kept behind closed doors (or at least in private conversations with close friends), not the whole university. What do you think? Is there anything wrong with the column? Or should she have the freedom to post whatever she wants, even if it's her own information in a school paper?

I alluded to the Bangin' in Baltimore column in my last post about the school paper.
I think the column isn't a bad idea, but I would prefer some more subtlety. A double entendre or two wouldn't hurt. Cosmo and Maxim have some racy articles, but somehow I don't blush reading those the way I do Bangin' in Baltimore.
Good luck on the election!
Pi Day contest = hilarious. I can't believe you memorized 100 digits. The sex column has to go. Great use of the jump!
I have got to say, as a writer myself, that this column's main problem is how juvenile and 'high school' the writing is. I'm all for the Post having a sex column, but how about an informative, interesting subject and not simply a laundry list of how to please a man, or birthday 'wants'. Also, it's insanely irresponsible to bring up erotic asphyxiation without discussing how this potentially dangerous act can be done safely and sanely, (and never with someone you don't know VERY well). This column might as well be written on a bathroom wall- it's all shock value and zero substance.
Giordana - surprisingly, it took me an hour and a half to memorize those numbers, and it took me 3 seconds to forget them after I repeated them from memory to the teacher haha.
Spencer - thank you! I'm crossing my fingers with elections.
As for the column, I think it shouldn't necessarily go, but I think it should be informative and interesting, as Summer said. It really was all about the shock value.
haha i remember memorizing the digits as well but in middle school. pi day is definitely one of my favorite days of the year.
