When I decided to return to college, one of my major concerns was how I would relate to my peers, particularly those 15 or more years younger than me. My husband strongly recommended UB to me as he attended a few years ago for some graduate courses. He said that he enjoyed his time at UB, he found the curriculum to be strong, and that the students seemed maturer. I've found my experience to be equally amazing.
I am truly impressed with the talent of my 20-something peers. Their outlook for the future has not been diminished by the economy (well, not too much) or the fast-paced changes to technology. They face challenges head-on. They have amazing writing, web, and graphic talents. Their ideas are fresh and their creations are cutting edge. Working with them has made me look at life from a different, fresher perspective.
From the 20-somethings, I want to feed off of their energy and desire to be all that they can be. I know that sounds corny (am I showing my age? does anyone say "corny" anymore?) but it is true. I find their can-do attitudes impressive. They are not afraid of being self-employed and doing their own thing. UB is doing a great job, especially in the corporate communications program, of preparing students for owning their own businesses. Some of my peers already have their own or are already making headway in their fields.
There is no doubt in my mind that UB was the perfect choice for me. If I've learned nothing else from my 20-something peers, I've learned that I can do anything I set my mind to. Yes, basically I knew that already but the fear and anxiety I feel (sometimes) about doing something new doesn't exist in their world. I am so happy that I've had this experience and look forward to learning more from my 20-somethings.
