UB Boxing

Let us start off with a great piece of UB trivia: Can you name all of the University of Baltimore's intercollegiate athletes?

Well, to be honest I can't either, but I do know of one. His name is Walker Stump-Coale, and he has represented UB at regional collegiate boxing events. That's right, in addition to being a father, working a full time job, and attending law school in the evenings, he somehow finds the time to train and occasionally fight in college tournaments.
That would be Walker in the white at the Rumble at Ritchie Tournament.

I met Walker through the Boxing Club. I have previously done some boxing myself, and was looking to get back into it. I showed up just looking to get in shape, but was impressed by the dedication of many of the members.

The Boxing Club currently meets on Tuesdays at 8:15pm and Fridays at 5:00pm in the gym. On Tuesdays we usually spend more time working on technique, including shadow boxing and footwork, some heavy and speed bag work, and mitt drills. Friday we tend to focus more on fitness, doing running and dodging drills.

I would welcome anyone who wants to work out and maybe learn some new skills to stop by. No experience is necessary. Keep in mind that this isn't a cardio-kickboxing work out, we do not do routines to dance music. Having said that, don't be intimidated by the rough nature of boxing, you don't need to fight or spar. Also, the gym has all the equipment you will need.

As for current members, the experience and skill levels really vary. We have some people who have never picked up gloves before, and some with a few fights under their belts. We all help each other in a friendly and supportive environment. A few people are turning over the idea of possibly fighting next semester, but many simply want to work out. The only real requirement is that you are safe. That means listening to whomever is coaching, following along with the drills, not using your cell phone while working out, and wearing proper attire (gym shorts, t-shirt, athletic shoes).

If anyone wants to come, welcome, and if anyone has any other great UB clubs or athletic events to share, leave a comment and let us know about them.

Yes, we have girls too!
